My Friend Ken
I spend a lot of mornings at Crossroads Coffee in The Fan drinking coffee with an interesting assortment of rather opinionated men discussing politics, women and everything in between. All of them are extremely interesting and smart while also being that group of older men who are just sick of it all and couldn’t give two shits if they offend anybody’s sensitive ears while going off on what’s wrong with the country, tattoos, piercing, the Middle East etc.
It was actually one of those rants that caused me to join a discussion and help bring about my current friendship with these men. None of us agree on everything and we all talk at the same time. It’s quite a thing.
The oldest of the group, Ken, is a Korean War Veteran who has certainly deserved his right to rant. He knows it and takes full advantage. As a Marine, I have a lot of respect for him. Especially since he was also a photographer in his younger days.
So today, we where chatting and I asked if I could do a portrait of him. I’d thought about this for a while. Considering lighting options, poses and the story I wanted to convey. In the end I abandoned all of those thoughts, grabbed my 85 1.8 and shot him in his little print shop with the hat he wears every day.
Portraits of Distance Runner Jason Yu
On location before sunrise, I met Jason at a pedestrian bridge I have wanted to shoot for quite a while. I had him running back and forth and in place while I tried to get a nice sharp frozen action shoot of him running with a dark stormy feel to the location. It was overcast to the East which delayed sunrise enough that I wasn’t going to able to pull this shot off before the street lights cut off at 7:30am. So, I abandoned that idea and concentrated on the portraits I needed.

Chinese Feast
Images from a ten course feast created by Jannequin Bennett and Ellie Basch

These images were taken during service in the pantry next to the kitchen. Some dishes went from the kitchen to the shooting table and finally to the dinning room. Leaving me with no more than a minute to shoot.
Jannequin and Ellie are amazing chefs and I always enjoy eating what I shot. The pork belly they presented was the best I have ever had. EVER!
